but it's been a good week of reports for obama. home prices are up. consumer confidence hit its highest level in four years. incomes and spending are up. how do you still, peter, make the case that the u.s. economy is broken? >> well, we're just not grow in at the pace we should. the obama administration has sold america on the notion this is the worst crisis since the great depression. when mr. reagan took office we had double-digit inflation, double-digit unemployment and the jobless rate peaked at 10.8%. when he ran for re-election, the unemployment rate was down much lower and the economy was growing at 6.3%. three times what mr. obama has accomplished. you know, if the participation rate was the same today as it was when the recovery began -- not too long ago, mr. goolsbee, the unemployment rate would be 9.6%. in fact, baby boomer's participation is actually increasing. because in this poor economy, their retirement accounts are worth so little and they're not getting any interest on their cds that they're going back to work. the labor force -- >

i think there are people who are disappointed that president obama is not going to be here this week. joe biden will be here tomorrow and the president said he's got a scheduling conference. after all, president obama was here four years ago and indicated, according to a new york times report, they talked to ben of the naacp and he had indications that the president was coming and so the president not coming is not going to rub some people very well here. but this, as i mentioned a few moments ago, is a very supportive group of the president. if you took a poll here, there aren't going to be many votes about mitt romney. having said all that, he hasn't made his pitch yet. >> and i believe the speaker is talking about mitt romney. let's dip in and listen for just a bit. my god. that's amazing. mitt romney is taking the stage. that was just dumb luck. let's listen to mitt romney. >> thank you. thank you. i do love that music. i have to tell you, i do love listening to that organ music and the prayer. that was a wonderful thing. good morning to all of you members of the naacp. >> good mo

i traveled with hillary clinton this week and she told me, listen, the political candidates are using this unfortunate incident. president obama did, she says, what anybody would do, and in the bush administration, when inadvertent acts happened, they apologized because they don't want to see the burning of a holy book and wanted the afghan people to know that this is not something that reflects u.s. morals and values. but brooke, it's a much larger issue with what's going to happen with the u.s. skpch and afghanistan says as it starts to pull out all the troops, the next year and a half is really critical for the u.s. and afghanistan to train police, and that's really going to be a problem now. and more importantly, the government of karzai, is he a partner? he's been speaking a very tough line in the united states, even in the face of the apology, and the question is, can the u.s. rely on him now as we reach toward withdrawal? >> a lot of questions, elise labott. next, phil black live in moscow. attempted assassination of vladmir putin. what happened? >> reporter: everything we know
